Deacon's Corner

Ensuring the needs of God's children are met

Deacon's Food Pantry

The Deacons have a cabinet located in Fellowship Hall which contains non-perishable food items.  This small but essential Food Pantry is used by many needy people in the Bristol/Levittown community. These are our neighbors, our church family and people just passing through.  The food is obtained from donations by members of the church.

The Deacons formally collect donations on the first Sunday of every month. We are posted at the front entrance in the Narthex, and at the side entrance in Fellowship Hall. If the Spirit moves you to make a donation at any other time, please feel free to leave food items in the boxes (blue with yellow stars) which are located on top of the Food Pantry.

Donation Suggestions

We gratefully accept any and all non-perishable pantry items!  If you are looking for ideas, here are some suggestions: Anything canned, such as soup, tuna, chicken, vegetables or fruit; peanut butter and jelly, crackers, boxed milk, instant oatmeal, dry cereal, cereal bars - anything you keep in your pantry at home which you like to eat. Think healthy and shelf stable. Also useful are plasticware, and paper plates, bowls and napkins, for those who don't have these items, or even a kitchen. Cans with those new pop-tops are also appreciated for those who may not have the convenience of a can opener.

We also accept donations of hygiene items and small blankets for the occasional person in need who shows up at our door: socks, wash cloths, toothbrush & paste, toilet tissue, soap, hairbrush/comb.

BROTHERS AND SISTERS - DON'T GO HUNGRY!!! This Food Pantry is for your use. If you need food from the pantry, ask any of the Deacons, there are many of us at Church all the time; or contact the Church Office for assistance. You do not need to ‘qualify’ in order to use the food pantry.  If you need something, help yourself.  If you have extra, we gratefully accept your donations.

We also provide information for other food pantries in the area, as well as the Angel Food Ministry that so many benefit from. You can find information on these resources on a list kept above the Deacon Pantry in Fellowship Hall, or ask any Deacon for help. You can find us wearing our Deacon badges on any Sunday.

May 4, 2008 is the next Deacon's Sunday.

Your Deacons and your community thank you for your support!

Who are the Board of Deacons?

We are a board of 21 adult men and women of all ages and backgrounds and a wide variety of gifts and personalities. Our term of office is for three years, but we can serve two consecutive terms. Each year about seven members of our Church Family are chosen and elected to the Office of Deacons. This election takes place at our annual Congregational Meeting held in December.

Ours is an office of sympathy, witness and service after the example of Jesus Christ. It is the duty of Deacons to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless and to any who may be in distress. We strive to do this with compassion and respect to those we minister to.

Board of Deacons – What do we do?

We are stewards of the money donated via your Deacons’ Fund envelopes on Deacon’s Sunday. This financial support goes to people in our congregation and to people passing through who are in need of emergency assistance. This money has gone to lift people out of dire emergencies, or other times it is used just to keep a struggling Brother or Sister afloat. In every case we strive to be nonjudgmental and must pray for discernment.

Other times when money is not what is needed, or if our paying a bill will actually cause more harm than good, we provide guidance, direction, pray and a shoulder to cry on.

We provide Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas food gifts, cookie trays, plants, etc. to our Homebound Brothers and Sisters. We also let them know they are cared for and loved, and are still valuable members of our congregation, and the Body of Christ, via visits and cards through the year.

We financially provide for the Celebration of Life Receptions and give as much of our hands, muscle and backbone as are available, to our Celebration of Life coordinators, to use at their disposal. We also strive to provide emotional support for those friends and family left behind.

We want to be there for our Church Family. If you need help, spiritually, financially or physically, please contact any one of us. We are here to help you and/or guide you in the right direction. We are all of us honored to be chosen for this office. We are also humbled as we have seen and know that at any time, any one of us or our family could suddenly fall ill- financially, physically and even spiritually. Therefore all consultations are done with compassion and strict confidentiality.
